Have you ever stopped to browse the shelves of essential oils at a health food store? Those little bottles of exotic-sounding ingredients promise to deliver a whole host of benefits. Perhaps you’ve even tried a little bergamot for a good night’s sleep, or lemongrass for a boost in energy.

But have you ever tried essential oils for hair? It turns out, essential oils have some impressive “healthy hair” benefits — and they can even help boost shine and keep hair looking healthy and strong.

Essential Oils – What Are They?

Essential oils are distilled from the seeds, leaves, stems, petals, and bark of plants. The resulting oil is highly concentrated and aromatic. This oil contains the chemicals that make up each plant’s “essence.”1

Many of these chemicals are known for their antioxidant properties, as well as properties that may help fight off pathogens.2And perhaps most famously, essential oils have properties that can help boost your mood and promote a sense of emotional well-being.

A Note On Safety …

The concentrated nature of essential oils means that their effects on the skin can be quite potent. For this reason, you’ll want to avoid applying pure essential oils directly to your skin or scalp.

To avoid any unnecessary irritation, it’s best to dilute essential oils for hair (or any part of the body) with a carrier oil — one that is safe and gentle for your skin. Some all-around great carrier oils you can use are:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Grapeseed oil

And if you tend to have sensitive skin, try doing a test patch on the inside of your wrist before applying any essential oil to your scalp. If you experience a rash, redness, burning, painful tingling, or significant itching, you’ll want to avoid that particular oil.

Without further ado, here are six essential oil combinations you can add to your routine to get the healthiest hair possible:

1. Encourage Healthy Hair With Rosemary, Cedarwood, Thyme, and Lavender Oil

This is a combination of essential oils for hair… and it just might be a pretty effective combination!

A double-blind trial studied the results of two groups of people who had experienced hair loss. The first group massaged a combination of rosemary, cedarwood, thyme, and lavender essential oils into their scalp daily. The second group only massaged a carrier oil into their scalp daily.

The results of the trial were pretty interesting: 44 percent of the patients who’d massaged essential oils in their scalp experienced an increase in hair growth. By comparison, only 15 percent of patients experienced hair growth while massaging with carrier oils alone.3

So, if you’re looking for an addition to your healthy hair regimen, you may want to consider rosemary, cedarwood, thyme, and lavender oil. Here’s how:


  • 2 drops of rosemary oil
  • 2 drops of cedarwood oil
  • 2 drops of thyme oil
  • 2 drops of lavender oil
  • 3 tablespoons of a carrier oil

Massage the mixture into your scalp. Leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing out, or leave on overnight. Store any leftover mixture in a cool, dark place for future use.

2. Maintain Healthy Hair With Rose Oil

You see, stress can trigger an increase in a hormone called “cortisol.” And cortisol, in turn, can affect hair follicles and disrupt the hair growth cycle.5

To reduce any feelings of stress that might lead to an increase in cortisol and an increase in hair loss, try a little rose oil. Studies have shown that rose oil may help lower blood pressure, slow breathing, and induce feelings of calmness and relaxation.6

To use rose oil, hold a bottle near your nose and inhale deeply several times. You can also try using a diffuser, which will slowly release rose oil vapors into the air, helping to promote a relaxing environment.

3. Fight Dandruff With Tea Tree Oil

Those little white flakes getting you down? They may be related to a yeast-like fungus called Pityrosporum ovale. An overgrowth of this yeast can result in itching, flaking, and over-production of oil. In other words – dandruff. If this is what you’re dealing with, you may want to stock up on tea tree oil.

In Australia, tea tree oil has been used for hundreds of years to treat a variety of skin and scalp conditions. And the benefits of tea tree oil are backed up by modern medicine, as well. Solutions including tea tree oil have been found to improve symptoms of dandruff by up to 41 percent.7


  • 5 drops of tea tree oil
  • 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil

Massage the solution into your scalp, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse out, and follow up with shampoo and conditioner.

4. Hydrate Dry Hair With Ylang Ylang

moisture. Styling practices like bleaching, straightening, and coloring can all lead to hair that’s dull, dry, and prone to breakage.8

Massage the mixture gently into your scalp. Then, use your fingers to comb any remaining oil through the ends of your strands. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then rinse out and follow up with shampoo and conditioner.

Or, for an overnight treatment, cover your hair with a shower cap and rinse in the morning.

5. Curb Excess Oil With Clary Sage

A scalp that produces too much oil can benefit from clary sage – a lilac-colored herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean.

Along with shampoo, clary sage essential oils for hair can help stem oil production that weighs hair down. It’s also been shown to help keep cortisol levels low – which means less stress!10


  • 10 drops of clary sage essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil

Massage the mixture into your scalp, and let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing out and following up with shampoo and conditioner.

6. Soothe Irritated Hair Follicles With Eucalyptus
